I made this En Plein Air piece while amidst the fields overlooking the mental hospital that Van Gogh spent much of his time at in Saint Remy, France. When I arrived deep into a peaceful plot of land and unraveled my art materials, I realized I had forgotten to bring my green pastels. When packing, I had thought of the pastel washed buildings - not of the overgrown fields boring lavender and olive trees. The green you see here is only the blues and yellows that have joined together. Caught in the moment, I did not capture a photo of this view, it lives on in my memory only as so.
What came about ended up absorbing some of Van Gogh’s exaggerated colors. This special sketch holds the spirit of Saint Remy in its pages. It’s sure to bring a creative inspiration to any collector.
