While in Hawaii I started to imagine the mountains coming to life once all had gone to sleep. In these waking hours, I imagined these Land Monsters made of the earthly elements tending to all the care for the earth we occupy. When I returned home to San Diego, I started to imagine these Land Tenders sleeping on the coasts of the 5, gently waking to watch over me and us. I see these creatures as dedicated protectors, connecting us mortal things to the permanency of the long story of the land.

This visual stayed with me and shape shifted on the canvas for two years before arriving in the fullness you see now. In Land Tender 01 you can see the various human-storied items among the poppies. They are removed from their hermetical meanings and put into a new context. The land woman appears to have roses cascading from her hair and the sky turns to water. People dance and jump off her back and she is unbothered by these mundanities as she gathers herself to stand among her fellow mountains. She holds everything, yet is attached to nothing - Land Tender 01 will bring great love, nurturance and humble guidance to any collector. She is my heart and soul.
